HAPPY 2021!

HAPPY 2021 DLSITES!!!

I am almost one hundred percent sure its legal to still wish a happy new year two months into the new year(amiright🙃).
I’ve been MIA since the 31st of December 2020. Its was somewhat intentional as i needed to figure out quite a number of things (uknow a girl’s gotta do what a girls gotta do🤗).

The new year for me felt same,I felt the last year was a month slower as the harmattan came for a week in January when it was supposed to be in December (I sha won’t let the whether mess with me). The second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic decided to welcome Nigerians into the new year and I’m like “be gone already na!” Universities have commenced physical resumption in stages and i know not when I’ll be resuming as i honestly don’t want to yet, because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

So yeah, y’all must be wondering what I was “figuring out” for a whole month. I will try the best I can to express myself as I go on. Well, for the latter half of the last year I was a mess emotionally. I was dealing with the longest writers block I’ve ever experienced, It was hell as writing is my all time favourite thing to do and my preferred means of communication. I needed to grieve a loss (which I still haven’t). I needed to find emotional stability and God has helped me up until the stage I am currently. I took a long deserved break from the pressures of my inexistent social life😂 (I’m sure you get the gist). I have honestly just been reading and polishing some of my skills.

As for my plans for the new year; (I don’t want to use the word “resolution” its been making me cringe lately) I made some serious healthy choices this year, some of which I’ll be sharing subsequently. I am upgrading and polishing some of my skills and plan to learn just two more this year. I have a word from God to run with and i am making some amazing financial moves this year towards the financial freedom i desire.

2020 In Poetry

What a year!
We practically got thrown into a horror movie somewhat unexpected,
We didn’t know how to live.

What a year!
The screens of gadgets and faces of people projected horror,
We started learning how to live.

What a year!
Tears and laughter got entangled giving us an edible bittersweet flavour as food,
We learnt to survive despite.

What a year!
Some lived, some left too early, some survived,
But we all have something to be thankful for despite.

What a year!
I write this on the last day of the year with a heart full of gratitude and a smile on my face,
I say this boldly that God was,is and forever will be faithful!

THE HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING GUIDE

GIFT GIVING THIS SEASON

Tis time for HOLIDAY SHOPPING! Can you feel Christmas already? The hustle and bustle of people shopping safely. You dont only get to shop, but we get to give the items to our dearest loved ones!it is a burden upon my heart that i seem to be among the few that still believes in gift giving not just for Christmas but for every occasion that warrants it. For me, Christmas is yet another opportunity to show my loved ones how much they mean to me,expressing myself using gifts. Below I’ll be sharing my personal guide to a no glitch Christmas Gift giving.

PLAN AHEAD

For people who have a large family (like mine) and or an equally large group of friends planning your gifting ahead is Paramount. Stretching out the cost of gifts over a few months would be easier on your budget instead of leaving it till the very last minute. Leaving gift planning to the last possible minute can be not just a strain but impossible on your budget. Planning ahead also saves you the trouble of over buying just anything since you can think well.

SHOP AHEAD

Rush shopping during the holidays can be not only stressful but extremely costly. An item sold for 6500NGN would become 10000NGN if not more by the time you are ready to do your shopping a week to Christmas. The absence of various items may pose as a problem again and going to different locations and stores trying to find something can be extremely stressful especially if you live in a city like Lagos. If you can shop ahead for your festive gifts and leave absolutely the unsure ones till last minute please do because even online shops deliveries take longer during the holidays.

GIFT THOUGHTFULLY

I cannot emphasis this enough! Gift thoughtfully! Don’t gift your three years old niece an eight years old bicycle just because “kids bike” is written on it. Don’t gift your wallflower friend a ticket to the pop convert instead of a stage play or a book and don’t gift your anime addict friend a customized tom cruise T-shirt instead of a ticket to an animie convention.
Tips
*Gift what would mean so much to that person.
*Gift something the person’s always wanted but couldn’t get or can’t afford.
*Gift something not edible (if possible)
*Be creative and Gift in the areas of what picks the person interest.
*If you are totally unsure of what to Gift, give a gift card to a favourite mall, book store or thrift shop.

DO YOUR INVESTIGATIONS DISCRETELY

Do not be so obvious when you are trying to get a gift for someone and you are unsure of a particular thing. For instance if you are unsure of your friends shoe size and you want to gift him a shoe you could put it in a conversation or check discreetly when he comes visiting or even ask someone who’ll also be discreet. If you want to gift your sister a trip and you are unsure of which country in the Caribbeans she wants to visit just play a game with her to find out or name a country you also want to go so she can talk about hers too. If you want to gift your father a new golf kit, ask him when he plans to change the current one he owns and trust me he’s gonna talk about the latest one his friend got and you can pick your cue from there.

PACKAGING

It is not enough to give gift, the packaging has to be on flick. Do not give gift in the store nylons or paper bag, get festive wraps or gift boxes if the gifts didn’t come in any. A lot of stores also offer packaging services if you can’t or don’t have the time to do it yourself.

SEND GIFTS AHEAD

For family and friends who do not stay in the same state or country, send gifts ahead so they can get it before Christmas or on Christmas. If its something like a gift card or reservation you can always send it on Christmas day.

DON’T LOOSE THE SURPRISE ELEMENT

Don’t be overly excited or obvious and give your gift away before the day. If you have siblings like mine, the you are in for questions! They would pick up the gifts shake, turn over and guess till your face gives it away but years of practice has given my face this indifferent look that I never give away my gifts.
Tips
*Don’t talk too much
*Disguise your gift well
*Don’t gift the too obvious
*Wrap your gift well don’t let the wrapper get torn or use a transparent wrapper.

DON’T VISIT EMPTY HANDED

My mother wouldn’t go visiting someone if she doesn’t have anything to gift her host and the same thing i do all the time i visit anyone. For the festive season come with a baked meal, ornaments, wine or flowers. Anything you pick that compliments the festivities is perfect.

With this guide I’m sure this Christmas shopping, packaging, deliveries and gifting is going to be without a glitch.

SPREADING THE FESTIVE CHEER

Yo! Melovelies, its that time if the year again and I’m super excited!!! Before y’all come for me because of my cheerfulness🙃 you don’t know how challenging the year has been for me. But I’m not going to let all of that get to me and ruin the festivities for me.

Where is your festive cheer guys?
I look around me and its so hard to find it,even the weather isn’t giving we Nigerians the holiday vibe (it rained today in Lagos! Rain? In December?). I don’t know about where y’all are but Lagos is too hot o! Imagine walking just 20feet and you are drenched already lets not even start with the dust(whew) and since central air conditioning isn’t readily available, whats a girl gonna do?

The pandemic hasn’t helped either. All the parties, hangout and concerts people look forward too isn’t in full force either due to strict covid-19 regulations. This has become the new normal except for the every day weddings that are happening (by the way I’m i the only one that noticed that everyone seem to be getting married?) there isn’t so much open social events. Recession hit Nigeria again and we’re like “kuku ke us na”. Exchange rate is just something else even my cousin schooling in the UK is considering deferring a year because his father can’t afford his tuition that has almost doubled. Let’s not even talk about onions🤐

How then amidst all the craziness can we spread the festive cheer because honestly as much as we try to be all Cool about all that’s happening, we need a reminder that we still need each other. Christmas and the new year is coming that hasn’t changed despite how the world has changed. Why don’t we all make that effort to make someone happy and infect people with your cheer. Deal?

IDEAS ON HOW SPREAD THE FESTIVE CHEER

REACH OUT TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Be intentional about reaching out to your family and friends this season. Call,e-mail your uncle, roommate and cousins just to check up on them.

DO AN ACT OF KINDNESS

With everyone dealing or trying to cope with the new normal, everyone seems to be so temperamental lately. Take a chill pill dear Michael and don’t be so mad at your Uber driver, knit a glove for Mr Rudolph at the homeless shelter, write a note of thanks to your secretary, let that old man standing in the BRT sit while you stand or leave a generous tip. It could be as easy as a smile, a word of encouragement or a helping hand can go a long way to spread the festive cheer.

DECORATE

Bring down those boxes stored in your attic, garage or basement and put them up and remind people of the festivities.

THE REASON

Share the Christmas story on social media and with your friends and family. I personally think this never gets old or boring no matter how many times I’ve heard it. (I literarily recite my mom’s version of the Christmas story under my breath right along with her😂)

HANG OUT

Spend time with your family and neighbors, see a Christmas movie with your friends, invite a family over for dinner or organize a festive sing along. By doing this you are spreading the festive cheer.

GIFTS

I can’t emphasize enough how important this is. It could be a food basket,a new bike for your neighbors son, a journal for a friend,a gym membership for your brother, or a study bible for your Mom. Gift giving is top on my list of way to spread the festive cheer.

I know its impossible to cheer up the world with these simple ideas. But we can still intentionally seek to bring alive hope and cheer to the people. And as a result, make this season a little more joyful. Do your absolute best to make someone happy this season.
Remember,cheerfulness is contagious!

LET’S

Let’s leave, leave with me
Let’s get out of the city,
Where all of the people have scars just from living.
Let us go down this route that leads to the country,
Let’s leave all the city light and all the noise that keeps us awake even while we sleep.
Let’s head for the serenity that beckons from the country, and go on a journey of discovery.

Lets breath in the clean air and find a quiet that wild nature brings.
Let’s get lost in the open and find our lost peace of mind.
Let’s find haven in the wild and claim our peace of mind.
Let’s go spread our wings in the open and let go like we always wanted to.
Let’s yell as loud as we want and bother no one while at it.

Let’s trust the process and keep the faith.
Let’s paddle our bikes down this dirt road, that has sunflowers blooming on the curbs.
Let’s run with wild flowers around us and breath in the wonder.
Let’s pick a basket full of flowers to make a crown for me and a boutonnière for you.
Let’s have fun and ride piggyback, that for me would be better than sitting behind the wheels of any car.

Let’s go down to the river that flows through our backyard and teach me how to swim in a water chlorine free.
Let’s take a walk by the shores barefoot, and let the sand massage out feets.
Let’s build a fire for warmth and camp out in the wild.
Let’s have the hoots and howls of the wild sing us to sleep.
Let’s wake up at 3am to dance to the rhythm of our heartbeat.
Let’s go searching for treasures of the wild and climb up trees to get breakfast.

Let’s go out and explore the open and find happiness.
Let’s go out, carving our names on tree backs and walls of caves.
Let’s have a street artist paint us on canvas, that would be worth much more that the thousand we have saved on gadgets.
Lets dance to music from musicians, not mare entertainers.
Let’s go see the stars at night on sea and watch the sun rise from our perch on a peak.
Let’s go out and see the world through our own eyes, not the screens of gadgets or memoirs of another.

LALALAND OR ANYLAND?

Lately, i have been going through the most challenging period with my emotions and i felt like I was slowly losing my mind and its not been an easy experience. Normally, it takes at the very most a day to get my emotions in check but its been over two months and i honestly do not know where to start sorting through the mess.

For being sane; God is making this possible for me. They’re times i feel absolutely in control this is mostly when I’m busy. It could be sewing, cooking, reading or writing. On this very rare occasions i get lost in LALALAND and i’m literarily floating in space with not a worry in the world and this bliss happens just about five percent of the time. The other ninety five percent is an unexplainable blur.

FAITH OVER FEAR has been my watch word this season and its been working because the times when the panic attack comes and i’m crumbling down the wall or anything i manage to grab on to, my breathing exercises comes in puffs of those words.

Breathe,learn to breathe

The scrivener

I talked to a someone i trusted lately intensively about all that’s been happening and i figured this person had so much more going on,I couldn’t even chip in a couple of words every thirty minute. When I get to finally chip in it was so obvious this person didn’t want to listen as the phone, face or the nearest random thing becomes a thing of great interest to that person while i talked. I didn’t want to be a bother or add to whatever was going on with this person so i just listened instead. This person wasn’t ready to go to ANYLAND with me.

I spoke to the one person i always could tell anything, hinting on what the main thing driving me almost nuts was,I expected a show of interest or concern as it was my own way to cry for help but that too went by ignored by another person and trust me I don’t blame them we all have things we’re dealing with. This person only ever went to LALALAND with me.

Find an outlet for the pain and VENT!

The scrivener

I bet y’all have that one person in your lives who we can’t hide anything from and we sometimes don’t want to talk to when you want to keep a secret. I never knew Nave was going to be that for me until i answered the call and Nave knew all wasn’t well beneath my cherry voice. Nave waited patiently as I ranted on and on about the most random things (and I never rant) but i did that till i had nothing else to say and my voice broke. I tried to get a promise out of Nave not to worry if I talk and the reply was “I care too much to promise not to worry” Nave said in word similar that “LALALAND wasn’t the only place i am to allow people go with and share with me.” HORRORLAND was where Nave wanted to go the most with me for i never lacked company for a trip to LALALAND but HORRORLAND has me all alone as they all left me standing at the borders. Nave went silent for almost thirty minutes while the words came jumbled all together at least i tried to be understood through tears and sniffles. This person went not only to HORRORLAND with me but EVERYLAND i wanted company to visit.

Did I feel any better afterwards? Yes, I did!!! I then got the understanding that if a human was willing to share my horrors and be there for me as I go through them, for humans couldn’t not matter how much they wanted to, go through it with me. But i have God who is going through all with me,every emotion, every turmoil, every panick attack, everything!!! And that got me reassured that All Will Be Well!

DEALING WITH IDLENESS:WITH JAHSKERYX STEPHEN

On the sequel finale of Dealing With Idleness, Miss Jahskeryx Stephen will be sharing her experience so far this season and how she’s been able to invest in herself despite.

Q- HELLO, HOW DO YOU DO?

I’m very well by God’s grace. I’m scaling through😀

Q- WE CAN GET TO KNOW YOU PLEASE?

My name is Jahskeryx Stephen, i am in my 20’s and i’m from akwa ibom state Nigeria. I’m a very open, fun and mostly hyper person. I am a fashion designer.

Q- HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS PANDEMIC PERIOD?

I’d say better than worse… Been trying to patch things up, couldn’t let the lockdown affect me even though it kinda did though😄… I got to learn new skills and that made it a bit interesting for me.

The most fun picture i took this pandemic season😉

Q- IN WHAT WAYS HAVE YOU BEEN FEELING IDLE?

Well, the pandemic period was quite an idle time in all ramifications because they’re times you run out of what to do… It really was a crazy time😅.

Q- WHAT ARE THE MAJOR THINGS YOU FEEL YOU’VE BEEN MISSING OUT ON DURING THIS PANDEMIC?

Lol… Wedding parties, the whole owambe thing and going to the cinema, which I had all planned out, and especially the feeling of going to work to be with kids who love to learn.

Q- HOW HAVE YOU BEEN DEALING WITH IDLENESS (IF NOT) WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS?

Well, to be honest, the pandemic delayed some major plans, but I plan on rearranging those things and setting myself up real good so that I’m not affected by whatever idleness the pandemic gave way for.

Q- CAN YOU LIST A COUPLE OF STEPS YOU’VE TAKEN OR WILL TAKE IN DEALING WITH IDLENESS?

I learnt new skills
I read a lot
I tried out new cloth designs at home, thanks to my sewing machine 😀
I got into farming too.

Q- HOW EFFECTIVE HAS IT BEEN ON A SCALE OF 1-10 OR HOW EFFECTIVE DO YOU THINK IT WILL BE IF YOU ARE JUST PLANNING TO START?

Five

The most boring picture i took this pandemic season.

Q- WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE OUT THERE WHO IS FEELING IDLE?

Do not at any point give in to idleness. It’s a time to get busy really, a time to give your life a brush up, a time to be more positive, make the best use out of an unforseen occurrence and see results you never imagined, positive ones at that… Trust God, trust yourself and get busy😉👌

Q- WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTE ON IDLENESS?

Everything is easy when you’re intentional about it but nothing’s easy when you’re lazy about it.

Q- A FINAL ENCOURAGEMENT FOR PEOPLE THIS PANDEMIC SEASON?

Stay indoors and safe! Make the most out of every situation, don’t let your guard down hence idleness creeps in.

BECOMING YOUR BEST SELF THIS NEW YEAR

Hello dlsites,

Becoming your best self starts by setting intentions not resolutions! The word resolution personally makes me cringe now, the word has been abused and drained of its effectiveness. Setting intentions for me is more effective in the long run. Resolutions tends to loose its effectiveness after the first quarter (that’s if you make it past January😂) at this point we’ve lost the motivation we had at the beginning of the year. Intentions on the other hand are more about your attitude than the action itself hence, the reason it births more result. For example your attitude towards exercising must be positive before you set a goal to run two miles everyday else you’ll end up struggling to finish the first week.

How many of you made plans, set goals and made a resolution list as long as Kevin’s hotel bill in Home Alone 2? Surely i’m not imagining the echoes of “me and I” replies.

I’ll give you a minute do to me a favour, take out that list or if you have it stored up somewhere in your head, kindly tick off the ones you’ve been able to do or accomplish and divide up into percentage. Be honest, at the pace you’re going are those goals achievable this year? If your answer is “yes” congratulations (kudos and twale to you o🙌) and if its “no” don’t feel bad because I’ve been there and being a part of the “no” clan is no fun trust me.

Here is a couple of ways you can achieve all this while becoming your best self and setting intentions.

B elieve in Yourself

There is no greater pep talk than that which you give yourself. It could be that time when you are grabbing unto that wall hyperventilating or when you stand in front of your mirror and tell yourself to go to that job you absolutely hate or when you are getting dressed up for the torturous show off get together called a “high school reunion “. Whatever you do be your own biggest fan and cheerleader, if you do that forget about anyone downing your strength. You’ve got to have your own back!

Make Healthy Changes

It could be as simple as taking enough water or grabbing an apple instead of a soda every time you need to snack on something but make at least one significant change this year. Personally one I made was to totally stop taking carbonated drinks which was sorta easy as I wasn’t really much of a drinker anyway.

Let Go Of Past Failures And Hurts

Fear of the known and the unknown are the greatest limiting factors in humans. Forget about what you failed at earlier and pick up the pieces of that seemingly shattered dream. Let go of that hurt ripping you apart from the inside and truly begin to live as you let forgiveness wash over you.

Stop Procrastinating

Did i just imagine your cringe? Lol, I know this hit home for many people but doing the easy things doesn’t necessarily count, doing the hard and dreaded stuff helps build character so open your window or door (depending on how large your procrastinating baggage is) and fling it out to Hades.

Discover Your Strength

For most people we try so hard to be what we are not by focusing on the things that we end up dreading and struggling to deal with. Build on your strength. If you have no idea where your strength lies, ask your family and close friends for the one thing you do absolutely well, excel at and truly enjoy without complaints. Get their feedback and work on whatever that is.

Stop Comparison

You know you’re uniquely you yeah? No one is made up of the same amazing stuff as you! Because you aren’t as tech savvy as your friend doesn’t make your amazing cooking skills less than your techy friend who can’t fry eggs to save his life😂 Don’t compare your self to anyone this year, its very unhealthy.

Think Big

Great minds think very BIG! Don’t limit yourself. You’ve gotta aim for the highest peak and if that isn’t achievable, you’ll be close to what you wanted given that you work towards it.

Take a Break

Everyone deserves a break at a point. Eventually you are headed for a painful future if you don’t give your body the break it deserves. So this year take time out of that extremely busy schedule and take that well deserved break and unwind. Your best self shouldn’t feel guilty for taking time out to unwind or for doing things that are just for you.

Set Deadlines

Creating goals without a deadline in view is as good as dead. For everything you hope to achieve set a deadline! Its not so bad to put healthy pressure on yourself sometimes.

Spend Time Wisely

Whatever you do, spend time wisely! The popular saying “Time Lost Can Never be regained” is very true! Guard your space jealously, that includes relationships with humans. You can’t be too close to everyone, set boundaries! While you love being of service to others, your best self should make plans for self-care, rest, repair, and replenish too.

Finally, Great habits don’t happen overnight, you have to make those tiny little changes that don’t seem like nothing now. Compiling tiny pieces together later, you’d be surprised at how massive they’d eventually add up to be.

SONG OF THE MOMENT- A sky full of stars by Coldplay.

DISCUSSION- What is that significant thing you’re doing or have done with the goal of becoming your best self this year?
