Hello dlsites,
Becoming your best self starts by setting intentions not resolutions! The word resolution personally makes me cringe now, the word has been abused and drained of its effectiveness. Setting intentions for me is more effective in the long run. Resolutions tends to loose its effectiveness after the first quarter (that’s if you make it past January😂) at this point we’ve lost the motivation we had at the beginning of the year. Intentions on the other hand are more about your attitude than the action itself hence, the reason it births more result. For example your attitude towards exercising must be positive before you set a goal to run two miles everyday else you’ll end up struggling to finish the first week.
How many of you made plans, set goals and made a resolution list as long as Kevin’s hotel bill in Home Alone 2? Surely i’m not imagining the echoes of “me and I” replies.
I’ll give you a minute do to me a favour, take out that list or if you have it stored up somewhere in your head, kindly tick off the ones you’ve been able to do or accomplish and divide up into percentage. Be honest, at the pace you’re going are those goals achievable this year? If your answer is “yes” congratulations (kudos and twale to you o🙌) and if its “no” don’t feel bad because I’ve been there and being a part of the “no” clan is no fun trust me.
Here is a couple of ways you can achieve all this while becoming your best self and setting intentions.
B elieve in Yourself
There is no greater pep talk than that which you give yourself. It could be that time when you are grabbing unto that wall hyperventilating or when you stand in front of your mirror and tell yourself to go to that job you absolutely hate or when you are getting dressed up for the torturous show off get together called a “high school reunion “. Whatever you do be your own biggest fan and cheerleader, if you do that forget about anyone downing your strength. You’ve got to have your own back!
Make Healthy Changes
It could be as simple as taking enough water or grabbing an apple instead of a soda every time you need to snack on something but make at least one significant change this year. Personally one I made was to totally stop taking carbonated drinks which was sorta easy as I wasn’t really much of a drinker anyway.
Let Go Of Past Failures And Hurts
Fear of the known and the unknown are the greatest limiting factors in humans. Forget about what you failed at earlier and pick up the pieces of that seemingly shattered dream. Let go of that hurt ripping you apart from the inside and truly begin to live as you let forgiveness wash over you.
Stop Procrastinating
Did i just imagine your cringe? Lol, I know this hit home for many people but doing the easy things doesn’t necessarily count, doing the hard and dreaded stuff helps build character so open your window or door (depending on how large your procrastinating baggage is) and fling it out to Hades.
Discover Your Strength
For most people we try so hard to be what we are not by focusing on the things that we end up dreading and struggling to deal with. Build on your strength. If you have no idea where your strength lies, ask your family and close friends for the one thing you do absolutely well, excel at and truly enjoy without complaints. Get their feedback and work on whatever that is.
Stop Comparison
You know you’re uniquely you yeah? No one is made up of the same amazing stuff as you! Because you aren’t as tech savvy as your friend doesn’t make your amazing cooking skills less than your techy friend who can’t fry eggs to save his life😂 Don’t compare your self to anyone this year, its very unhealthy.
Think Big
Great minds think very BIG! Don’t limit yourself. You’ve gotta aim for the highest peak and if that isn’t achievable, you’ll be close to what you wanted given that you work towards it.
Take a Break
Everyone deserves a break at a point. Eventually you are headed for a painful future if you don’t give your body the break it deserves. So this year take time out of that extremely busy schedule and take that well deserved break and unwind. Your best self shouldn’t feel guilty for taking time out to unwind or for doing things that are just for you.
Set Deadlines
Creating goals without a deadline in view is as good as dead. For everything you hope to achieve set a deadline! Its not so bad to put healthy pressure on yourself sometimes.
Spend Time Wisely
Whatever you do, spend time wisely! The popular saying “Time Lost Can Never be regained” is very true! Guard your space jealously, that includes relationships with humans. You can’t be too close to everyone, set boundaries! While you love being of service to others, your best self should make plans for self-care, rest, repair, and replenish too.
Finally, Great habits don’t happen overnight, you have to make those tiny little changes that don’t seem like nothing now. Compiling tiny pieces together later, you’d be surprised at how massive they’d eventually add up to be.
